In the neighborhood of Olaya Herrera in Medellín, Colombia, Gonzalo Rendón-Ospina and his team have been transforming young lives through their project, “Sowing the Seeds of God’s Kingdom in the Hearts of Children.” This initiative aimed to provide a nurturing and faith-filled space for children aged 8-12, teaching them about Jesus and his way of love, and offering much-needed community support.
The project was born out of a deep desire to address the vulnerabilities faced by children in this community, many of whom experience neglect, poverty, and lack of guidance. Gonzalo’s vision was to use weekly sessions to instill values like reconciliation, equality, truth, and love, anchored in Scripture and tailored to their lived experiences.
Each Saturday, Gonzalo and his team hosted sessions that began with a warm welcome and included dynamic activities, Bible lessons, and moments of reflection. Children explored themes such as forgiveness (Matthew 6:12) and love for creation (Luke 12:24), expressing their learning through art and group discussions. A key aspect of the program was fostering stronger bonds between children and their parents. Workshops with psychologists and social workers equipped parents—many of whom face economic and emotional challenges—with tools to support their children’s growth.
Beyond the weekly sessions, the project included enriching experiences, such as a trip to the local zoo, where children and their mothers learned together and strengthened their family connections. Creative workshops for mothers, including making holiday-themed crafts, added a vocational component to the project, empowering families to generate income.
Although the project has concluded, its impact will endure. Gonzalo and his team created a booklet capturing the children’s reflections and artwork, a testament to their journey and a resource for future initiatives. A video summarizing the project is also in production, preserving the memories and lessons learned.
Gonzalo extends his heartfelt thanks to EES for making this initiative possible. As he transitions to a new ministry in another city, he dreams of continuing this vital work, planting seeds of faith and hope wherever God calls him.
