What does evangelism look like when it’s shaped by linguistic hospitality, cultural affirmation, and shared leadership? For longtime Latino Ministry leader Luisa Bonillas, it looks like ¿Qué es un episcopal?—a Spanish-language formation series designed to equip lay leaders in the Episcopal Church with theological understanding, liturgical knowledge, and a deep sense of belonging in the life of the church.
With support from the Episcopal Evangelism Society, Luisa developed a five-session virtual course delivered virtually and in person, rooted in the context of Spanish-speaking Episcopalians across Province III. Each monthly session featured two guest presenters, covering foundational topics such as the Anglican Communion, Episcopal Church history and polity, sacred liturgy, holy orders, and leadership in governance. The program culminated in two in-person gatherings that fostered community, spiritual reflection, and mutual support.
At the heart of ¿Qué es un episcopal? is Luisa’s conviction that evangelism happens most powerfully in one’s own language and cultural context. Drawing on her decades of lay leadership, bilingual formation, and borderlands experience, Luisa created an affirming and accessible space where Latine participants could grow in faith and leadership—empowered not only to serve their local congregations, but also to imagine new possibilities for ministry across the Episcopal Church.
