Evangelism for the 21st Century grants awarded for 2006-2007

 Summary

The Board of Directors awarded twenty-nine Evangelism for the Twenty-First Century Grants in the spring of 2007.  These grants supported 39 students, 6 faculty/staff and 2 family members.  15 grants included international travel.

Grants have also been awarded, in recent years, to applicants from Bexley Hall, the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, Duke Divinity School, Princeton, and Fuller.

Grant Recipients

Randall Balmer and Catherine Randall, Faculty, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, to conduct a weekend of music, film, lectures and worship in a relatively unchurched community in the Diocese of the Rio Grande.

 

Ian Barnes, STM ’07, General Theological Seminary,  to travel to Pakistan to observe the faith practices of Christians living in a Muslim context and share observations in a presentation on lessons in faith, peace and evangelism for the twenty-first century.

 

Kesha Brennom, MDiv ’09, Virginia Theological Seminary, for an immersion experience in the Dominican Republic and the creation of a resource to prepare mission teams and local communities to engage each other successfully.

 

The Rev. Dr. Walter Brownridge, Faculty, School of Theology at Sewanee, to lead a pilgrimage of five students to explore poverty, racial reconciliation, disease and environmental issues in South Africa.

 

Kevin Cross, MDiv ‘08, Episcopal Divinity School, for conference for adolescents, addressing addiction and spiritual Life.

 

Annie Cumberland, MDiv ’08, Virginia Theological Seminary, to develop a curriculum for youth based on C. S. Lewis’ The Silver Chair.

 

Shelley Denney, MDiv ’08, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, to develop Christian Education materials and train teachers in El Salvador.

 

The Rev. Dr. Katherine Grieb, Faculty, Virginia Theological Seminary, for a pilgrimage to India.

 

Linda Hall, MDiv ’08, and Michael Barnham, MDiv ’07, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, for an immersion experience in Kenya and to work with Kenyan immigrants in the US.

 

Robert Hendrickson, Student, General Theological Seminary, for an immersion experience of evangelism in three diverse provinces of China.

 

Jane Jeuland, MDiv ’08, Berkeley Divinity School at  Yale, to prepare a feasibility study for an after-school program for high school students for an urban parish.

 

Dr. Karen Keely, Family, Episcopal Divinity School, to travel to the archives of the Episcopal Church to research an article about nineteenth century evangelism to children.

 

Zena Link, MDiv ’08, Episcopal Divinity School, to develop a curriculum on community organizing for religious organizations.

 

Lindsay Lunnum, MDiv ’08, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, to participate in the Contextual Theology Programme at the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstowne, South Africa and to share her understanding  of South African theological thought with the seminary community and the Diocese of New York.

 

The Rev. Dr. Joan Martin, Faculty, Episcopal Divinity School, to hold a conference on social fragmentation issues in the Black Church.

 

Stephen McHale, MDiv ’08, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, to build a virtual Episcopal parish.

 

The Rev. Belle Mickelson, MDiv ’07, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, to hold a bluegrass gospel camp for Athabaskan Indian students in Alaska.

 

Michael Millard et al, Nashotah House, for a mission trip for nine students and one faculty member to Peru.

 

Valerie Miller, MDiv ’08, Episcopal Divinity School, for an immersion experience at Nuestras Pequenas Rosas orphanage in Honduras.

 

John Newton, MDiv ’08, Virginia Theological Seminary, to prepare and teach a Gospels curriculum to Anglican seminarians in Tanzania.

 

Heather Payton, MA/MDiv ’09, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, to prepare an ethnography for a parish in San Francisco, in order to identify opportunities for outreach and growth.

 

Yejide Peters, MDiv ’08, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, to study multilingual Episcopal liturgies in order to identify opportunities for evangelism through linguistically blended liturgy.

 

Susan Pinkerton, MDiv ’08, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, for an immersion experience in Tanzania and to return and share her experience with her seminary, parish and diocesan communities.

 

Kathryn Reinhard, MDiv ’08, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, to participate in the Contextual Theology Programme at the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstowne, South Africa and to share her understanding  of South African theological thought with the seminary community and the Diocese of New York.

 

Phoebe Roaf, MDiv ’08, Virginia Theological Seminary, to teach Biblical Hebrew to Sudanese seminarians and priests at Renk Bible College in Sudan, and to study with African seminarians at the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstown, South Africa.

 

Debra Slade, MDiv ’08, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, to produce a CD with hospitalized children.  In the audio recording, they are encouraged to explore their faith and how it helps them find hope in their illness.

 

The Rev. Richard Towers, DMin, Seabury-Western, to prepare and deliver Christain Education and health curricula for use with hand-held computers, in remote areas of Micronesia.

 

Sven vanBaars, MDiv ’08, Virginia Theological Seminary,  for an immersion experience in Tanzania with his spouse, the Rev. Jennifer Kimball, and to create a computer network to link parishes and support mission and evangelism.

 

Patrick Ward, MDiv ’08, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, to prepare a set of best practices for the pastoral response to the psychiatrically ill.
